All of the anecdotal references contained in the testimonies seem to indicate everything about these trials resulted primarily from the well known complexion biases typical of the time and place of each trial. Hence, the claim concerning "Portagee" women quite likely fits the attempted "passing" scenarios of claiming "Portagee" ethnicity when full citizenship was being curtailed due to complexion considerations. The was a common dodge offerred to fend off the extreme biases of the era. Finding actually historical evidence of Portuguese woman isn't likely.
