Hello Katie Brown,

I don't think that this book would be a good one for a 12 year old.

But I would suggest the following books:

Education of Little Tree by Forrest Carter

"This tale about the upbringing of a half-Native American boy has sparked much debate over whether or not it is fact or fiction as well as over the author's motivations for writing it. Nevertheless, The Education of Little Tree remains one of this century's most beloved stories. It recounts, in autobiographical form, the story of a boy, Forrest, who was orphaned at the age of 5 and left to be raised by his Cherokee grandparents. The grandparents gave him the Indian name of Little Tree, and provided him with a rich and inspiring education. This wise and beautiful tale unfolds with a unique blend of American simplicity and spiritual profundity, and, whatever its origin, it leaves a profound, lasting impression on the reader."

and

Sang Spell by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor

I think either one of these books would suit your purpose.

Happy birthday to your Grand Daughter !!

Regards,
Don Collins
