Yes there was a case on the books early on of a East Indian Williams who did have a Native American woman Frankie, his family seemed to have moved off to Maryland with Sembo Gam Gamms ect. i feel you might have a point because many of the records of that time list Indians as Ingons officail court spellings Ingons, so dark Ingon [malen ingon ]makes sense.
I posted a while ago the Dutch Baptisms in New York many of the couples 1635 were stated Portuguese and some[ Negers Portuguese] with the Van Angolas. There is no reason that these families could not of migrated to North Carolina by 1650s. There were portuguese Sur names around Beaufort and Perquimans.

One interview by a old Croatan woman in North Carolina stated their grandmothers were Portuguese women, By that time this tribe was well protected and had no reason to make anything up to protect themselves. The Goins and Goodmans were part of this tribe and stated in court they were called [malengeons THE - Goins] in NC and Redbones in South Carolina.
but then again most Portuguese everywhere in the world use Portuguese names. I can find only one family Benjamin and John Totton Tuttin Tuton Totten ect of Grainger tenn that actually used Portugeuse names regularly such as Zulima Fatima Gonzalva Buena Gomes Gomez, I have no other family from this area that actually used Portuguese names, I do know his sons lived close to Solomon Bolton early on in Obion Tenn but cant say if there was any Portuguese connection between them. I have read some pretty stupid things concerning this issue, One is that George Teater Sr who remarried Benjamin Tottons wife Ester had a Portuguese slave woman named Zulima who raised the kids, so they named all their kids Portuguese names. Not so his will named his negro gal Milly and he set her free, I think its all conncocted to protect his greatgrand son who was Governor of Kentucky Governor Bradley.
It was also said he was murdered for his money in 1794, all boloney, he was alive well as the Capt of Jackson Tenn in 1802

So in this case I agree there was always some motivation for things people did or said in regard to Social Status.
Regards
