TIM HASHAW WROTE; ''But apparently, according to people who are citing a fictitious so-called "Hashaw theory", now I allegedly claim that ALL African ancestors of the Melungeons arrived in 1619 on the White Lion ship. Or that ALL Melungeons came in a ship in 1619.'' --------------------------- For the record; There is NOTHING in the sentence I wrote that said Hashaw claimed ALL African ancestors came on the White Lion -- or ALL Melungeons came on a ship in 1619. ALL I wrote was; "Tim Hashaw's theory was they were the African slaves from 1619'' The previous excerpts - and these below -- and others I have not posted yet -- certainly appears to me that Hashaw's theory centered around 1619 and I am flabbergasted as to why he would be now trying to distance himself from this theory? The Melungeons and their NEIGHBORS said they were Portuguese. I have posted many articles centering around these Portuguese origins.... but I certainly did not create the theory. I have also posted I believe the term may have derived from the 'middle English term 'mal engine' which meant deceitful, tricky, treacherous, wicked' -- I was also not the first -- or even second person to introduce that meaning. ----------------------- From MERCER PRESS;[Children of Perdition Melungeons and the Struggle of Mixed America] ''From the founding of America, through the American Revolution, the Civil War and World War II, the author documents the histories of several related mixed communities that began in Virginia in 1619'' From HIS book; Page 17 August 1619 — Two years after Pocahontas' s death, a mystery ship appears in the Chesapeake Bay with Africans to trade. This is the very first African Middle Passage to English-speaking North America. Jamestown is where the roots of the American Melungeons start sixteen months before the Mayflower drops anchor at Cape Cod. ''The captain of the White Lion traded “20 and odd” of these Mbundu Angolans to Virginia planters. This well-known incident in August 1619 is the earliest documented entry of Africans into British-ruled North American colonies; the first Middle Passage out of Africa. Not known however is the connection between those Mbundu on board the White Lion and the “poor whites” of Appalachia who are called “Melungeons'' http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gowenrf/malangu.htm The very first black ancestors of Melungeons appeared in tidewater Virginia, not in the 18th century, but in 1619. http://multiracial.com/site/content/view/354/27/ Notify Administrator about this message?
