Rebecca, I am a 'newbie' to DNA and recently had my mtDNA done. This test is maternal all the way back. That is, from you to your mother, then to her mother, then to her mother, and on and on back....you do not get any mtDNA from your father...sad to say. The mother hands down to her daughter this mtDNA for her to hand it on down. She also passes it to her sons but he can not pass this mtDNA on to a child of his, either sex. Is this the kind of DNA test you had done?

Now the yDNA is the male direct line with his father, to his father, and on and on back. Females do not have any yDNA at all.

So these two kinds of DNA tests are limited in what they can reveal about your ancestry.

I was disappointed in my test...how very limited it really is. I did learn my migration paths, tho'. I feel I got my money's worth.

MaryE
