James: Your statement about colonial records are more true than you could ever imagine, I have been tracking indian slavery in colonial time, south carolina was a common destination for indians taken captive by other tribes and slave raids by white traders, you would be shocked to learn how many were sold to be sent to the west indies, the same thing was happening in new england, virginia didn't hold with indian's being used as slaves like other colonie's did, in reading an old court record I found one instance of the court declaring a slave his freedom on proof he was actually an indian, after proof was brought from south carolina. there are far more records than you would imagine. just as an added note of interest, the first instance of black slavery I have found so far was in 1619 when a dutch ship sailed into virginia and sold 20 negro's as indenture's, indenture would mean they gained their freedom eventually,....yes I am very much in agreement with your observation about swept under the rug colonial records....jim
