Jeannie, I didn't read your post as criticism, I just thought my post needed to be clarified. All evidence appears to show Bryson descended from Thomas Gibson of Virginia, North Carolina and 'not' from the families who claimed to be 'Portuguese'. Wash Osborne identified 'Poke Gibson' who came to Scott County from Letcher in 1820 as a 'Portuguese Indian' and Vardy Collins wife was called 'Spanish Peggy' so it appears there was at least one family who 'went by' Gibson that were thought to be Spanish or Portuguese but I have no clue who Poke is or the family 'Spanish Peggy' belongs to.
