I've familier with the work of all those individuals, but I still believe those "denigrations" involving "individuals historically referenced as "melungeon" , have been over-stated. I'm not saying incidents didnt occur, I just havent seen much about any organized attempt to strip Melungeons of their land, etc.
As for the article you pasted, I stand by my opinion, asthe time period it covers was during a time when most attention focuesd on "Melungeons" was by journalists. The term "free people of color" was obsolete, and the Appalachian experience is not identical. I also agree with Don, the danger was often directed toward the offending non0Melungeon than vice-versa. That can be deducted from any number of news articles in the region and time frame.
