Fuentes is a very common surname in the lower Rio Grande Vally , Good luck. The old Starr County culture had a lot to do with smuggling, LOL. Still does.
In 1842 New Mexico was part of Texas, in 1846 became part of the US as a territory. We didn't become a state until 1912.
