Joanne, I have read where Benjamin's parents were John and Avis Rawlinson from Kent County Maryland, but I have been unable to prove this. This is the information that is posted on the lamartin.com website and that Virgil Raulerson has posted. This has not been proven. I know that in the register it is listed that John and Avis Rawlinson had two sons named Charles and Benjamin, but it does not mention a George or William and William was born the same year as the Benjamin in the Register(1727).There is most likely a connection, but I do not think that they are Benjamin's and William's parents.Possibly or more likely Grandparents. I believe that the Rawlinson family in Richland County S.C. is most likely descended from the George listed on Freeafricanamericans.com.It begins with an Elizabeth Rawlinson in York County, Virginia, 1663 and her "assumed" daughter Elizabeth Born 1684. I believe that the Richland Co. S.C. Family is connected to this 2nd Elizabeth through her son George Rawlinson born 1705(who married Gibby Gibson's daughter, Tabitha) and not Elizabeth born in 1708 because it states, she was "probably" the mother of William. Also the names of the Rawlinsons in the Freeafricanamerican text matches up with the names of my Rawlinson family in Richland Co S.C.(Names:George(Benjamin's son and Grandson's name), Joanna(George's Sister and Benjamin's and William's Aunt), John(George's and Joanna's brother, and Benjamin's and William's Uncle)and Elizabeth). If their mother was named Avis, one of them most likely would have named a daughter Avis. George Rawlinson, born 1705, is first mentioned in court documents in York County, Virginia. He is then found in various documents in Bertie Co. N.C.("John Gibson, Gideon Gibson as well as Smith and Rawlinson [Rollinson] were sued in Bertie County, NC., by Philip Lightfoot and Benjamin Harrison, executors of Francis Lightfoot in 1730/31).
(30 April 1727 George Rawlinson gives his promissory note to Francis Lightfoot-Witness Richard Grinselle.
9 June 1731 Order to the Provost Marshall to summon George Rawlinson planter of ----Precinct to appear in General Court at Edenton the last Tuesday in Jul next to answer Phillip Lightfoot & Benjamin Harrison executors of Francis Lightfoot dec'd").
There are not any other Rawlinson's on record that were in N.C. this early.I believe George is William's Father because George was in N.C. by the 1730's and William shows up in various Tax record documents pertaining to "free persons of color" in the 1750's(William1 Rawlinson/Rollinson was a "mollatoe" taxable with his unnamed wife in William Person's Granville County, North Carolina Tax List in 1750 [CR 44.701.23]. I am almost defenant that William is my 5th Grt Grandfather Benjamin's brother because they both migrate down to Richland Co. S.C. together in the 1760's. I know for sure that the Rawlinson family was part of the large "free person of color" community in Richland Co S.C. in the mid 1700's and early 1800's because I have check census records and cross check them with other records.
In 1810 there are 10 Rawlinson/Rollinson families listed as "Other Free" in Richland Co. I am still searching for information on Benjamin's and William's parents and the Rawlinson Family in Richland Co S.C.I do beleive that there is a connection between John and Avis of Kent Co, Maryland and the Richland Co Rawlinson Family, but I am almost certain that they descend from George on the freeafricanamerican website due to Tax records and other Official records on the Rawlinson family. If you have any other information on the Rawlinson family, I would be very grateful if you could share it with me.Thank you.
