He was a neighbor and friend of Henry Clay, by whom his political opinions were influenced. He has always been a strong anti-slavery man, and since its organization has affiliated with the Republican party. At his father's death he inherited eight slaves, but immediately gave them their freedom. Seventeen grandsons of his father served their country in the war of the Rebellion. His grandfather accompanied Daniel Boone on his first visit to Kentucky, and was therefore one of its early settlers.
