Welcome:
1976 is remembered by many as America’s 200 year birthday, but for Decatur County, Tennessee it is remembered as the year the World’s Largest Coon Hunt Benefit for St. Jude was born. The Decatur County Coon Hunters had staged a benefit hunt the two previous years for the American Cancer Crusade, but this year they had decided the proceeds should go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.They approached the Decatur County Jaycette to help run the concessions, and thus the beginning of a beautiful relationship that has grown to include everyone in the entire county.
The early days were hard as the facilities were crude compared to the Decatur County Fairgrounds building, which now houses the event. But there has always been a feeling of intent and purpose, of community spirit and togetherness at this event. It is a real “homecoming” to some as old friends greet each other year after year, and new friendships are formed.
From day one, the philosophy of the St. Jude Hunt has been the same as Danny Thomas, founder of St. Jude.He said, “That any child should die before his or her time is unacceptable.”That is why he built the hospital, and that is why the St. Jude Coon Hunt continues to this day and has been so very successful. As of today we have donated 3,078,000.00.
Did any of the people involved in that first Hunt in 1976 have any idea of magnitude of what they were endeavoring to do?It is doubtful that any of them had that much insight. But all of them are very proud that they had a small part in something that has touched so many lives.
