Hi Joanne,
Sorry:)
This is almost certainly Captain Abraham Snelling of Massachusetts, a sea captain. He's the grandson of John Snelling who came to Massachusetts in the mid-1600s probably with his uncle Dr. William Snelling.Abraham's great aunt would be Wealthian Snelling Alley, progenitor of the Alleys of MA and VA.
Descendants of some of these mariner Snellings tell me they are very hard to track because they are all over the place and gone from records for long periods of time. These Snellings were originally from Devon UK.
Here are a few references from which I base my belief:
From South Carolina Historical Magazine-
"Custom-House Charleston Cleared for departure, Ship Venus,Abr. Snelling to London, Snow Buck-skin, John Colcock to ditto - Ibid. Saturday, Dec. 29, 1739"
From South Carolina Historical Magazine (snippets)-
"by Capt. Snelling who will go from this to Boston in a week.Meantime I remain My dearest your very lovin and affect. husb. and most humble ser'tRobert Pringle" August 30th 1740(?) (don't you like that last part-HA!)
Hope things are doing well in Kentucky.
