I know a lot of people who have worked on these Gibsons and Collins and are all stuck about the same place you are.
Do you know if they lived near Carraway/Caraway Creek?I believe that is where the Keyauwee Indian Village was and it seems I recall reading somewhere that there were still some families that connected to that tribe residing there in the 1940s.
The Keyauwee are the ones visited by John Lawson in 1702 and referred to as the 'bearded and moustached' Indians.

There is a Thomas Wilbourne Gibson born about 1760 and residing in Randolph County when he enlisted during the Revolution.He lived in Burke County, Stokes County and then went to Ohio and Indiana.
In 1804 he abandoned his 16 year old son Hezekiah in Burke County.
Another Randolph County family in my files is Stephen Gibson and Mollie Stillwell -- son Robert born 1765 in Randolph County.I believe this family is enumerated in Burke County and then Stephen and sons went to Wayne Co., Ky.Robert went on to Macon Co., Missouri where I believe some of his descendants are found on the Osage Nation Reservation in Missouri.
Major Gibson whom Ree has already mentioned was also said to have been born in Randolph County.
I assume you have the 1850 census that shows David and Nancy Gibson with 88 year old Thomas Gibson in the household and assume you also have this;
Thomas Gibson, born in Randolph County, North Carolina, on 15 November 1763. When he was 18 years old he volunteered in Guilford County and served for two years. He was allowed a pension while a resident of Randolph County. He died 15 October 1850 leaving his children, David, Joseph, Hannah (wife of P.M. Nixon), Mary (wife of John H. Hill), and George Gibson [M805-355, frame 0409].
Have you seen the Gibson DNA page?Do you know of a male Gibson from your line who might be able to join this search?
