My mother, maiden name Lela Ida Melott, relates a story identical to the one you post regarding Charles N., about the step-father, about going out west with an uncle whose name was Charlie as well, being shot when someone was stealing the uncle's cattle, etc. She was one of many children of Charles "Charlie" and Anna Shreve (Shreeve?). They lived in Ohio, West Virginia, and I think Pennsylvania has been mentioned as well. My mother is 93 and is still living, her mind is very clear. All her siblings are deceased with the exception of possibly one sister. Siblings were: Jacob, Carl, Pearl, Lillie (Lellie), Bertha, James Paul, and Esther. Charlie also had a son, Frank, by a first marriage to a lady from Zanesville, OH, who died. Several years later, he married Anna, there was supposedly quite an age difference. Frank was married and had a son who was older than my mother. The only sibling who could still be alive would be Esther, she moved to Hutchinson,Kansas many years ago and would be in her 80's. Frank's children have offspring & grandchildren, of which there has been no contact in years. Any in the area would probably be in the Chester WV area. I have not been told anything about Charlie being a traveling minister. From what I have been told, he worked in a Pottery in East Liverpool when he was able to work, but suffered from Asthma and "could not work a lot". From things my mother has said in recent years, I think he may have liked to drink. Anna worked in a pottery as well, and was a skilled seamstress. The family seems to have suffered from poverty by my mother's account, and never seemed to be able to overcome it. My mother married my father at age 15 in 1926.
