The following information is mainly from parish records of Baptisms, Marriages and Deaths, principally of Deeping St James in the South of Lincolnshire in England.
Thomas Measures in whom you are interested was the ninth of eleven children of Thomas Measures b 1794 and Mary Tansley b1803 of Deeping St James. In order their children whom we have discovered were: William b1826, presumably died in infancy but no record found; Susanna b1827, d 1848; Thomas b 1830, presumably died in infancy; William b1834, d 10th April 1912 at Upton in Nottinghamshire (gravestone) m Elizabeth Hutton of Covenham Co. Lincs – he was the butler at Upton Hall which is now the National Horological Museum and my wife’s great-grandfather; Elizabeth (Betsey) b1833 (Survived into adulthood as Godparent or witness in later records, but no record found of marriage or death); Ann b1834, m Sandall Wilson; Sarah b1836; Alice b 1837; Thomas b 1840; John b1843, d 1845; Henry b1845. We had surmised that some of the “missing” members of the family might have emigrated, but till now had no evidence of it.
Thomas Measures b 1794 and his brother John b 1797 d 1888 were the children of Thomas Measures b1770 d1797 and his wife Elizabeth Belton of Deeping St James. After the death of their father Thomas and John were apprenticed a paupers by the parish to a farmer in Market Deeping (the next village) and their mother remarried. John married Hannah Scampion b1822 d1864 and they had eight children: James b1826, Elizabeth b1828; John b1833, Mary Ann b 1836, Thomas James b1837; Sarah b1839; Hannah b1841 and George b1843.
Thomas Measures b1770 was the ninth of eleven children of John Measure d April 1784 a carpenter of Deeping St James (It is after this generation that the terminal “s” of the name is universal. It comes and goes before!). Thomas’ mother was John’s third wife, Ann Wells d May 1787. John’s children (by his three wives) were: Elizabeth b1740, Ann b1744 d July 1747, John b1746 dAug 1793; Elizabeth b1753 m Thomas Johnson and had six children; Mary b1759 m ?forename Simson; Tobias b and d 1760; Tobias b1761 d Apr 1762; Prudence b 1763; Thomas b 1770; William b1772; Ann b1774.
Mary Tansley, wife of Thomas Measures b1794, was the daughter of William Tansley and Alice Tory b 1777. Alice Tory was the daughter of Thomas and Jane.
