Hello Donald Owens!
I found your message in GenForum (dated 19 Oct 2003). I might be able to help!
I am researching the Melles/Mellis family (my maternal grandmother was a Melles). I have a Robert Melles baptised 18 February 1837, at Stirling, son of William Melles and Jean Ferguson. The Melles/Mellis spellings are apparently quite arbitrary, well into the 19th Century!.

This Robert "disappeared" (not in the Censuses with his family and no death date discovered). Therefore he may well have emigrated. The birthplace of your great grandmother, at Kippen, Ontario, is almost too much of a coincidence, as the family in Scotland also settled at a place called Kippen, not far from Stirling!
Also the fact that he named his first son William implies that he may have followed old Scottish naming tradition and called him after his father.
Have you got a death date (and age at death) for your Robert? This might be the clue you are looking for!
If you are part of "my" family, you are in luck, as I can supply a fairly full history!
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes
Christopher Normand
