Melchior MELL, 1746, Hesse, GER
Melchior Mell, a grandson of Conrad MELL, emmigrated on the ship Ann, Sept
27, 1746 is cited in the book, "Eighteenth Century Emigrants from
Langenselbold in Hesse to America", by Annette Burgert. German records
are given back to ca. 1650, as well as the American records from Hain's Church, as
recorded in Pa Archives
Sixth Series, Vol.6, Rev. John Waldschmidt's Records.
This source indicates that Johan Melchior Mell and wife Elisabetha
Hedderich had at least two sons before emigrating, Carl Johann Henrich,
bp. 21 feb 1742, and Carl Henrich, bp.
7 June 1744. It doesn't say if the first Carl died as a baby, but it
does say that it was not uncommon for people to have more than one
living child with the same name. So maybe there were two Carls living in
Heidelberg Twp. Berks Co. PA simultaneously.
The book does not mention sons Adam or John.M.A. Gruber, in a 1928
manuscript(Berks Co. Historical Society), makes a pretty good case for Adam being a son of Melchior.
Adam's grave stone in Cumberland Co. says he was born in 1745, which may
have been after the family left Langenselbold, and before they took ship
for America.
The only passenger list for the Ann I have seen is in Strassburger's
books, which only gives the adult males.
Has anybody ever seen a passenger list for the Ann Galley which included
all the
passengers? Perhaps there was one made in Rotterdam, or there is some
family correspondence available which could shed some light on this. Any
other descendants of Ann Galley passengers out there with info to share?
Does anyone know if proof of Adam's parentage is included in "The
History of St. John's(Hain's) Church" by Rev. Kershner?
Also, does anybody know where the MELL name originated? It would seem to be likely from France when the Huguenots dispersed in the 1500's, but I have not seen the name included among them.
