Could your JOHN MELL, b. 1814, PA, be brother of my SARAH MELL, b. abt. 1808, in Lower Heidelberg Twp., Berks Co., PA. Her father was WILLIAM MELL, b. abt. 1788, probably Berks Co., PA. WILLIAM MELL was probably descended from PETER MELL, who was in Berks County in 1743. ("PHILA CO. NATURALIZATIONS, 1740-1752" In Berks of Old. (Southwest Pa. Genealogical Services, Laughintown, PA) Vol. 3:3 (Nov. 1985), pp 19-28. About half of Berks County was Philadelphia County originally. He might also have been descended from a JOHAN(N)HENRICH MELL who was in PA in 1765, although I have no record of JOHAN being in Berks County.

Early records show a CHARLES MELL living in Heidelberg Twp., Berks Co. 1790 Census. CHARLES MELL was probably the father of the above mentioned WILLIAM MELL, and probably the Grandfather of Sarah. PETER MELL may have been CHARLES' father.

Pre-census records show a MELCHOIR MELL living in Phila. Twp., Phila. Co. 1746 (Oath of Allegiance in the Province and State of PA) and a MICHAEL MELL living in Phila. Twp., Phila. Co. 1750 (Oath of Allegiance in the Province and State of PA) as well as the above mentioned, JOHAN HEINRICH, Phila. Twp., Phila. Co., 1765 (Oath of Allegiance in the Province and State of PA).

There is a PHILL (PHILLIP?) and WILLIAM MELL listed as being in Barbados in 1679, Barbados Census. Barbados was considered to be "America".
