I am interested in any information on the land grant mentioned in the story below. The fore-bear that the story is speaking of is a Mell (at least I think it is).
The writer is a great aunt of mine whose lineage is:
John Mell b. abt 1650father of:
Thomas Mell b. abt 1690father of:
William Mell b. abt 1735father of:
Thomas Mell b. abt 1761father of:
Thomas Sumner Mell b. 1792father of:
Mary Ann Dubose Mell b. 1826mother of:
Martha Axson Lambright b.1853mother of:
Edna Axson Ferguson b. 1883 (the writer of the story).
My Story of the little Goose Creek Church.
Some time ago Mrs. Yancy, Miss May Kennedy, Saidie and Edna Ferguson were discussing old churches at the breakfast table here at Baptist Village. During the course of the conversation reference was made to the “Goose Creek Church”. Either Saidie or I mentioned the fact that we had seen the church, and Mrs. Yancy said she had also seen it and was anxious to know something about it. It has remarkable carvings around the building. We told them that it was about twelve miles from Charleston South Carolina and it was located on a portion of land granted to our Grandfather of many many generations ago in 1677 known as “The Goose Creek Tract”. However we felt sure the church had been placed there many many years after the grant and we knew practically nothing about the church although we had seen it.
The following Christmas Miss Kennedy appeared at our door with the picture of the little church on a postcard which had been given to her by Mrs Yancy, and she, Miss Kennedy, has asked her if she objected to her giving the little church picture to the “Fergusons” for Christmas - no objection but thought it would be fine, so Christmas morning Miss Kennedy appeared at our door with the little Goose Creek Church located on the tract which came into possession of our fore-bears so many many years ago.

A picture of the postcard can be seen at the following address: http://theoldentimes.com/goose_cr_church.htmlhttp://theoldentimes.com/goose_cr_church.html
I have tried to research the grant but am unable to find a grant in the name of Mell. What I have found:
