George and Helen (Meikle) Watt were my husband's Great Great Grandparents. I have the following children for them:
James Watt b 24 July 1834 in Dunfermline
Rosa Watt b. 22 Oct 1836 in Dunfermline
William Watt b. 17 Mar 1839 in Dunfermline
George Watt b. 7 Nov 1841 in Dunfermline (another source says 1849)
Janet Watt b. abt. 1845
John Watt b. 24 June 1851
Edward Watt b. abt.1853/1854
William, my husband's line, is in some later records as William Meikle Watt.
The 1881 British Census index has Geoge and Helen as follows:
George Watt, Head, Married, Age 74y, Male, Occu. Retired Warper, b. Dunfermline, Fife Co., Scotland
Helen M. Watt, Wife, Married, Age 70y, Female, b. Dunfermline, Fife Co., Scotland
Edward Watt, Son, Unmarried, Age 27y, Male, Occu. Clerk, b. Dunfermline, Fife Co., Scotland
This makes George b. abt. 1806/1807 and Helen b. abt. 1810/1811.
The families in Scotland often used the following traditional naming pattern for their children:
1st son - named for the father's father
2nd son - named for the mother's father
3rd son - named for the father himself
1st daughter - named for the mother's mother
2nd daughter - named for the father's mother
3rd daugher - named for the mother herself
This pattern fits for the third son named George. In addition, a George Watt, son of James Watt and Janet Anderson, was born 14 Dec 1806 in Dunfermline which fits the naming pattern and George's age in 1881.
The Dunfermline Parish records have the birth for a Helen Mickle, daughter of William Mickle and Rosy Smart, on 29 Oct. 1810. This fits the naming pattern as well and the age would be right. The marriage record for William and Rosy (Smart) has his last name spelled as "Meikle". I don't have any actual proof yet, but I think this is correct.
