My great great etc grandfather James Meikle who came to Nova Scotia from Scotland always spelled his name Meikle in Nova Scotia, as do his descendants. But on his papers from England and Scotland vouching for his character, army service and marriage, he is recorded as James Mickle. He was literate and had a nice penmanship indicating some education, so he could tell the difference. I have a signature from Nova Scotia when he was overseer of the roads around Pictou, Nova Scotia, and in that one he signs as MEIKLE. In his case at least, both spellings were used.
