Hi there Henry

I saw your comments on the site and thought I would reply. My husband Alistair Milne is descended from Henry Meiggs's brother and business partner in South America, John Meiggs, via John's son Willie Meiggs (Willie's daughter Helen is Alistair's grandmother). We are both very passionate about the Meiggs story and visited South America in 2006 to investigate further. During our trip, we visited the church in Lima where both Henry and John have stained glass memorials, the graves of some of Henry's children, Minor Keith's family crypt, Henry's grave, his stone bust on the platform of the now defunct central railway station in Lima, the street on which their home was once located and even took a trip on the trans-Andean railway line he built! In our collection we have several Meiggs medals (issued by Tiffany's) to commerate the contruction of the rail roads and a silver Meiggs 'jockey club' medalion which we presume is connected to the horse racing course the family were patrons of in Lima. We also met a Lima based family with the name 'Meiggs-Gates' who were of mixed South American/Chinese decent. Their ancestors were once Chinese labourers on the railways and it seems the family were given the name Meiggs as a sign of favour; strangley, the old grandfather looked uncannily like Alistair's dad and was very emotional about his geneology and the origin of his 'interesting' looks.
We have many fantasic memories and photos of the trip, as well copies of family letters and photos which were collated by a relative into a book format for private publication. We would love to hear more about your Meiggs family stories. I do know that John's children were visited by their 'American cousins' in London after Henry had died and John had relocated his branch of the family back to the UK (where he made investments in other railways related ventures). Maybe one of those children were a grand parent of yours? I do hope you will write back, and you can reach us any time at yasminbaby@hotmail.com.

Kindest regards

Yasmin Milne
