I am just beginning my genealogy search. I got some information from Janelle from the Meigs History and Genealogy website while trying to search for a James P. (Price) Meigs who married a Martha Jane Evans sometime between 1900 and 1930. These are my paternal grandparents. Martha was a very dark skinned woman of Cherokee descent. James was very fair skinned, my mother said he looked "white", but I do not know much about his lineage. They lived in Nowata, OK. Their children are James P. Meigs Jr., Cecil Meigs, Marion Meigs, Arnetha Meigs and Joseph Meigs. Janelle found the Cherokee Freedman roll number for James, 1145, and census card number 448. James may have been a slave of Jonathan Meigs and his wife Jane Ross. I am interested in whatever information you may have about the slave descendants and how to research this information.
