Hello Suzi,
How nice to hear from you! I hope we can prove that your Matilda Meigs is the same one I discovered in my family tree. If we can, I believe you will be very pleased indeed.
I know of Matilda from a single, but reliable, source: the probate papers of her brother, George Bennett. I have a copy of this document. Matlida is mentioned this way:
"that the said deceased (George) left no children, nor widow, that he left the following kindred, to wit: four sisters, namely Polly Johnson, who resides in the State of Illinios, Henrietta Smith, who resides in the State of Michigan, Matilda Meigs, whose residence is unknown to petitioner, supposed to reside in some western State, and your petitioner, Nancy Schooley, who resides in this County, and widow of Ezra Schooley deceased."
Nancy Schooley is my ancestor. Her parents, and the above Matilda's, were George Bennett and Rebecca Frisbie. Two published genealogies list the children of George Bennett and Rebecca Frisbie. They both list the above George, Henrietta, and Nancy, plus Jeannette, who is not named in the above probate papers. Neither genealogy lists Matilda, but one states "probably other children."
Rebecca Frisbie is descended from two Revolutionary War patriots: her own father, Abel Frisbie, and her mother's father, Ezekiel Hayes. Both are recognized by the DAR and the SAR.
Ezekiel Hayes was the great-grandfather of Rutherford Birchard Hayes, the 19th President of the United States of America. Rebecca Frisbie died in Seneca County, NY, as did the above George Bennett.
According to your records, your Matilda's son, Levert, was born in NY. What do your census records show for Matilda's birthstate? NY? When was Matilda born? How old was she in 1850 and 1860?
If you have high-speed access to census records (I don't), you could search for Matilda's sister, Polly Johnson, in Illinois. Perhaps she was living near Matilda.
Sincerely,
Michael
