What was Robert Mefford Sams's Mefford connection?

This is a stump-the-experts query: why did my great-grandfather have the middle name, Mefford? All we know is that the Meffords were a Brown Co OH family contemporaneous to the Sams, Ellis, and Fiscus families, who connect this way: My great-grandfather, Robert Mefford Sams (1844/46-1910) was the son of Amon Sams (1810 Brown Co OH - 1858 Peoria IL) and Rebecca Fiscus (1812 Brown Co OH - 1898 Peoria IL). Everyone knows that Amon was the son of Stephen Sams and Keziah Ellis; what nobody is sure about is the parentage of Keziah (1779 VA - 1850 IN), and the parentage of Rebecca Fiscus. These are the only two places that the Meffords might be connected through marriage. Does anyone have any clues about how my great-grandfather got his middle name?
