I am researching Mrs. Mary A.J. Meers, a widow who married my ancestor, Isham P. Latimer in Pike County, Arkansas Brewer. At the time of the marriage, Mary was a widow with four children (Nancy C., William F., Mary A.E., and Sarah E.), all born in Georgia from 1838 to 1845.

Mary A.J. Meers was born in South Carolina. Armed with this sketchy information, I then began looking for a Meers in the 1840 Georgia census whose wife would be the correct age to be Mary, and who had a son and a daughter both under five years of age. The ONLY Meers I found to fit this profile was Moses Meers (age 20-29) of Forsyth County. Also of Forsyth County was a William Meers (age 40-49) of the correct age to be Moses' father. This William Meers had a sizeable family, with six sons and three daughters. I surmised that this William Meers was indeed probably the father of Moses, and I began looking on the internet, and I did find that some researchers connected Moses Meers, b. April 30, 1816 in SC, to William Meers (source for Moses Meers is the Old Pendleton District, South Carolina, Genealogical Society). The fact that these Meers (and also Mary) came from South Carolina strengthened my belief that William Meers was the father of Moses. Mary A.J. Meers' only son was William F. Meers, and this also was an important clue.

Mary A.J. Meers last child, Sarah, was born in Georgia in 1845. I presume this is about the time that Moses Meers died, if he indeed he is the first husband of Mary A.J. Meers and the father of the four Meers children; see Isham Prewitt "Lattemore," Brewer Twp, Pike County, Arkansas, 1850.

Who is Jeremiah Meers, who is b. abt. 1836 in GA, who shows up very nearby in Spadra, Johnson County in 1860? Surely he belongs with the Rev. William Meers' family as well.

Also, did Andrew J. Meers go by Jackson? I have seen a Jackson Davis Meers also listed as a son of William Meers, but have found no further information on him.

Can anyone out there confirm or deny Moses Meers that Moses Meers is (not) the son of William? Is the William Meers in Forsyth Co., GA in 1840 the same William Meers that is in Johnson County, AR in 1850?
