Hi Ron
Thanks for the information. I have looked at the book by J.C. O'Meagher and found it very interesting. If I remember correctly it even mentions one of my ancestors, William O'Meagher of Bleakfield.
Have you come across the book 'Irish pedigrees; or the origin and stem of the Irish nation' by John O'Hart? It's held at Library Ireland and can be accessed online. In it he states that the O'Carrolls and O'Meaghers were descended from a common ancestor but neither seemed to be an ancestor to the other.
I have had another look at the coat of arms for both the O'Carrolls and O'Meaghers and whilst the lions and sword look similar they are in fact different. Even the motto is different. I suppose that both families (being descended from a common ancestor) used the lions and sword but to differentiate themselves from each other, used a different style of lion and sword.
I am always confused when trying to find ancestors. As you point out, with all the different ways to spell a name it can become a nightmare.
Good luck in your research as well.
Angela
