Mark,
There are some who point to Henry Rinehart Meeker as the father of William Goodman Meeker and his brother Robert. I don't have a clue who Henry Rinehart Meeker was or if he ever existed. The father of both William and Robert was Albert Meeker (1594 to 1647). There were several spellings of the name, Meeker, or MEAKER or MEACAR or MECAR.Please notice the similarity between Meacar and O'Meachair. Virtualy nothing is known about him except that he fought for the British General David Leslie during the siege of Dunaverty in Scotland in 1647. There is some indication that he died in that conflict. The Irish at that time had spread to some degree throughout the area of Wales, England, and Scotland in an effort to escape the tyranny of the British. The quickest way to acquire land was to fight for one side or the other in anticipation of being rewarded with land. Stolen land was much easier to provide to soldiers than paying a salary. Most of the Irish sided with their Celtic brothers, the Scots. Many however sided with the Brits believing that the odds were better. As to the question regarding religion, Henry the VIII,(28 June 1491 – 28 January 1547) was King of England from 21 April 1509 until his death. He was also Lord of Ireland (later King of Ireland).Remember it was Henry that gave the Church of Rome the boot because they refused to grant him a divorce. At that time anyone living in England with a brain became a Protestant as quickly as they could. It was called survival and the quest for social and economic advancement. Mark, I would be interested in your take on the family history, particularly anything that would expand the knowledge base on Albert Meeker in Gaelic (Ailbhe O'Meachair).I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Ron
