I have a transcripton of a letter written by my gg-grandmother (Emeline Johnson Wright 1833-1912) to her son (my grandmother's uncle - Edward Everett Wright) in about 1897. In it she names ALL of the children of Isaac Meek's two wives which I have never seen posted - so here it is (abbreviations were added by me):
"I write this from memory as I heard it from my mother [Jemima Meek Howard Johnson] and cousin Emily Tiernan. I know nothing of my great grandfather, only that he was a Welshman.
My mother's father was Isaac Meek. He lived in Virginia. He married there, but came to Ohio in 1818 [we know that he was in Ohio by 1803 as he served in in the first legislative session that year -lj] and was in the legislature one or two terms. His first wife was a Miss Robinson [Mary Robinson] Her children were the following:
Sylvester Meek a Farmer, lived in Wabash County, IN
Moses Meek a Farmer,
Aaron Meek died when a young man
Jacob Meek a Methodist Minister, lived near Newton,Tuscarwawas County, OH
Josiah [Could also be Joshua - lj] Meek - a farmer; died in Jefferson County, OH
John Meek a Methodist Minister
James Meek a Methodist Minister
Elizabeth Meek married Mr. Pumphrey
Mary Meek married Mr. Scott
Ruth Meek married Mr. Clemens
My grandfather married a second time - Rachel Hedges and their children were:
Daniel Hitt Meek a Farmer
Isaac Meek a Farmer, Tuscarawas County, OH
Joseph Meek Blind
William Meek a Farmer, Jefferson County, OH
Margaret Meek married Mr. Taylor
Nancy Meek never married
Jemima Meek my mother married Mr. Howard and later
Nathan Johnson, my father
These are the names of my mother, her brothers and sisters, not one of them living, all married and raised families, but Aaron, Nancy and Joseph." ....
There is a bit of information about Emeline's paternal grandfather, John Johnson and his two wives and many children, then she goes on about her mother, Jemima.
"My father's second wife, that is my mother, was Jemima Meek. Her first husband was Cornelius Howard. They had two sons named Joshua and John Howard. Nathan Johnson and Jemima Howard married after the death of his first wife. Their children were:
Emeline Johnson b 1833 married Nathan Wright
Nancy Johnson b 1835 married Frank Cash, d Iowa 1881
Rachel Johnson b 1836 married Joseph Lukens, d 1882
Cynthia Johnson b 1838 married Samuel Birney
Harried Johnson b 1840 married Mr Cash after Nancy died
This is not a very satisfactory affair. We have a family register. I think Cynthia Birney has it and I shall probably not see it soon."
There are a few more details that I have left out as they do not relate to this board. I have not ever found out where the "Family Register" is. I hope that somebody out there has it - but it is probably in a landfill somewhere.....
I have lots more information about Emeline Johnson Wright and her family if anyone wants to share.
