Jacob and his brother Hendrik
The History of the first Meeboers
by Bob Meeboer
translated by Michael van der Zee
Dedicated to the first feminists in the family :
Grietje Meeboer and Aaltje van Loozenoord
August 1983
On September 5th, 1746, in the Dutch Reformed Church in Putten, Peter Hendrickson " young man of Ermello " marries Grietje Hendriks, baptized on May 10 th, 1728 in Putten as the daughter of Hendrik Janse and Steventje Massee.
Peter Hendrikson's christening - and therefore his parents cannot be traced back to Ermello. After their marriage they settled in the hamlet Tonsel (situated in between Ermelo and Harderwyk) where they took a small farm.
In a kind of census in 1749 ( see fig.1 ) we find that they are " not capitalists whatsoever in Tonsel.
The rent they had to pay, in comparison with their neighbors, does however indicate that the house they possessed must have been relatively small.
The couple had eight children of which only two reached the adult age, namely Jacob and Hendrik, who were to become the first Meeboers.
Although Hendrik lived to be eighty years old, he stayed single and without children, so that Jacob can be considered as the founder of the Meeboer family.
Peter and Grietje Hendriksen died in 1775 in Tonsel, the one only three weeks after the other.
Could it be that a contagious disease, such as occured often in those days, was the cause of this ?
