My grandmother's maiden name was Medlin. Georia May Medlin
was born in 1907 in Chatham-Moore County, North Carolina or
what today is now Lee County. She lived all her life here
in Lee County. She married John David Blackmon Stone. They
for the most part of their lives were farmers.
The Medlin clan here would back in the 60's and before
have large family reunions. Being born in South Carolina
and living there through my early years, I found it so
thrilling to come up and get to go to one of the reunions
and see cousins, great aunts and uncles and the enormous
amount of food that was prepared for these occaisions.
Before we could eat we would have to sit and listen to a
brief history of the family by the family historian, Mallie
Medlin, who was up in age and my grandma's cousin. Mal as
he was called enlisted the help of a friend of his that was
a noted historian of various families that settled in the
Piedmont of the State. Mal would place a report on his and
Rassie Wicker's progress each year. My grandmother was the
oldest of her brothers and sisters of which there were
5 brothers as I recollect and 5 sisters of which only the
three youngest sisters are living today.
After the patriarch of the family past away there seemed
to be fewer and fewer coming to the reunion. By the late
1960's the last of the Medlin reunions was held.
Two days ago several cousins decided enough was enough
and have set a date and informed all family members they
can reach that after some 40 years we will hold our first
Medlin reunion again with the three sisters and any one
in the Medlin family of our line that is 60 years old or
older being honoured. A brief history from the booklet
that Mallie had gathered and published will be read to
the new Medlin family members. More research will be under-
taken to find out more about the Medlins that came to Moore
County, and what their lineage was so that at each reunion
we can continue to add to the history of this family known
as " ONE WHO LIVES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD"...
Two of the brothers of my great grandfather that I can
recall off the top of my head now are; Bud,and Benjamin
Medlin. Bud was Mallie Medlin's father. Mallie died in the
mid 1980's. My grandmother died at the age of 92 years old
out living all but one of her brother's. The only sister
she lost was Leila Medlin-Douglas, next sister born after
her. Some of those reading this that may be a part of the
family who have moved away yet may remember some of these
that have passed away; Wilbur Medlin and his only wife,
Mrytle Spivey-Medlin; Jeroud Medlin and his wife, Lillian
Stone-Medlin; Johnny Medlin and his wife, Irene Haire;
Jerome Medlin and his second wife, Jane Arnold; Nonnie
Medlin and her husband, Burt Foster; George Medlin and wife; Ann; Mal Lee "Mallie" Medlin and his wife,Nonnie
Jones; Leila Medlin and her husband, Jennings Douglas;
Betty Medlin and her husband, Joe Denton; JoAnn Medlin
and her husband, Kenneth Jernnigan; Ernest Medlin and his
wife, Ann ??-Medlin... Maybe these names may mean something
to some of those reading...The reunion will be held on
September 04th.,2010... for those who are of the line
would like to attend please contact me off the forum at;
[email protected]
Thanks and everyone have a nice day!!!
Bill
