Benjamin Medlin, was from Carthage Township, Moore County, NC. Benjamin was one of many children born to William Owen Medlin (birth, 1777, and Happy Frye Medlin, birth 1782), also in North Carolina. We know the Medlins were farmers, even in Europe, prior to coming to the New World. The original name, Medlyn comes from the moorlands of Europe and those folks were farmers. In 1660 Richard Medlin was born and christened in the Church of England in Redruth, Cornwall, England. It was this Richard, and his bride Rachel, craving the adventure of coming to the New World, in 1680 passengers on the ship Caroline from the United Kingdom and as the trade winds swept them south, might have spent some time in Barbados when the ship was in for repairs. In late 1600s there is evidence that Richard did in fact receive land and worked that land before his first son, Richard, Jr. was born and continued the lineage down through many sons and finally coming to Joel, who lived in Moore County from 1745 and whose son, William Owen, born 1777, Cumberland County and Happy Frye Medlin, born 1782 had their own family in Carthage Township, Moore County, North Carolina. It is known that the Medlin, Rose and Frye families married into each other families. We see that Benjamin lived in 1850 next door to his brother, Daniel and his parents, William Owen and Happy. On the other side was the older Sarah Rose whom it is not known but is suspected Benjamin’s wife, Rosetta might have been from the Rose family. In researching the times and families it is not known for sure, but appears these families were farmers, and in later times were involved in the making of turpentine for all its medicinal and daily uses.
Benjamin and his wife, Rosetta had several children. William Thomas 1841, Archibald (“Baldy”), 1842, Riley George, 1845, John Benjamin, 1848, and one girl, Mary Rose. By 1860 this family had moved to Cobb County, GA and for what reason it is unknown except to say possibly they followed family and moved for a better life and to own their own land as it is known they did in fact own several tracts of land while living in Cobb County, GA. This family were Baptists as they are found as members in the Union Grove Baptist Church in Powder Springs/Lithia Springs, GA in 1861 forward. They had several more sons and daughters. Benjamin died in 1889. Rosetta, his wife died in 1886. William Thomas, Archibald, Riley all participated in the Civil War. William Thomas was promoted to flag carrier and lost a leg in a skirmish at Seven Pines. He in fact died of wounds from the Battle of Seven Pines and Archibald died at the battle of Jonesboro, GA after Atlanta was burned. Only Riley survived and returned home to GA from prison, Camp Chase at the end of the war. In 1867 Riley, alongside his father took the oath of allegiance and citizenship, moving on to eventually settle in Texas where along with his brothers, Acey Benjamin, Riley George, Francis Marion, Andrew Jackson and John Benjamin, some settling in Upshur County, Texas and others participating in the land lottery of Oklahoma - 1901 and helped establish the town of Cottonwood, later known as Verden, Caddo County, Oklahoma. Riley also married, had one daughter and died in Oklahoma in 1906. He is buried in Verden Pioneer Cemetery. The brothers’ land sits where the Police Station in Verden now stands. They owned the general store located on the corner across from the railroad station. In 1901 they were in the land rush and Frank got 160 acres. His patent is registered in Oklahoma. The following were siblings and found in Oklahoma and Texas in 1900: William T. (died in Charlottesville); Archibald (died in Jonesboro); Riley George (buried in Verden Cemetery, Verden, Okla); John Benjamin was settled in East Mountain area; married and had several children by 1900; He is buried at the Terrell State Hospital in Terrell, Texas; Died in 1915; Francis Marion married the sister to Lou Clevenger, her name was Mary Ellen and he is buried in Wichita Falls, Texas, Riverside Cemetery; Acey Benjamin is buried in Throckmorton, Texas; Mary is buried in Powder Springs/Lithia Spring, Union Grove Baptist Cemetery alongside her parents, Benjamin and Rosetta, Janie and Annie; Andrew is buried at East Mountain Cemetery alongside Lou Clevenger Medlin
