MEDINA (soldier from Durango, Nueva Vizcaya)
Soldiers and Other Colonizers of the Vargas Era, 1692-1696
Some who founded families in New Mexico came as soldiers to assist Vargas and the native New Mexico soldiers in restoring the kingdom. ome were granted lands for service to the crown but marriage was often the main reason for these soldiers to stay in New Mexico. Other families came to New Mexico as settlers but were not part of the official colonizing expeditions of 1693, 1694, and 1695. Family name established by the soldiers and other settlers are found in family lines of people with Hispano roots in New Mexico.
