Thanks, Vance. This does add to the mystery: The 1619 Visitation of Kent shows John Cheney and wife Elizabeth, daughter of Hugh Gyles, with son William.

The undocumented internet material seems to indicate that Elizabeth died soon after William was born, and that John then married Elizabeth's sister Mary, by whom he had a number of additional children -- including the Richard in question. None of this second family, however, is yet documented. The search goes on!
