I am looking for anyone who may know more about the Gyan family who were at North Curry before 1225. They are probably the from the same family who were at Woolston as early as 1166 (a Jordon Gwihiane held Woolston at that time then it passed to Adam Gyan, then to his descendants). Woolston was once called Woolston Gyen. There was a Walter Gyan (Gene) as well as a Simon and William Gyan in North Curry in the 1200's, I believe Walter was the father of Simon and William. William was the ancestor of Robert Gyene, mayor of Bristol. Robert held many other positions in government before becoming mayor. His possessions were taken by the King for debts owed (the fine levied against him was 20,000 pounds), he was somehow involved with Hugh le Despenser. I don't know if he was arrested or what transpired but he died about January 21, 1353. There is supposed to be an inventory of his property (in IPM)which show him to very wealthy, I do not have access to that. I have found few records of the family after the 1370's. Interestingly enough though I found that some property that he had at his death (that he and his mother held in 1316)at Long Sutton was referred to in 1541 as Gyensmershe, then as Geanesmershe in 1602. I have a Robert Jeanes who died in Long Sutton in 1584. Renee Notify Administrator about this message?
