Statistically, coming at this from an American perspective, if one has traced several dozens of family lines to the colonial coastline, odds are that you will find a Plantagenet descent amongst at least a couple of these families.

Descent from a medieval royal house, particuarly the English Plantagenet monarchs, is not a particularly rare phenomenon. English royal houses were not particular about their younger sons and daughters marrying into the lesser classes and so after a few generations one is down to the commoners. The trick to all of this is, of course, finding a vetted line-by-line descent.
