I'd say you have to judge case by case. There are a lot of bogus genealogies out there, the result of sloppy work, wishful thinking, snobbery, etc. Theoretically speaking, if your ancestry is primarily English and you go back 25 generations, you are probably related to everyone in the country several times over. In practice, it's almost impossible to prove it before about 1500.
