My long-standing brickwall is John KYRTEN (there are numerous spelling variations of the surname), probably b before 1550, who married Alice BURTON (father Griffin, relative William Walton BURTON) on 20/10/1567 in Bradfield, Berks. Most of John & Alice's children were chr about 5 miles away, at Burghfield, between about 1570- 1588. They had son Griffin (also Griffith) KIRTON snr., my ancestor, but I have not been able to find his chr, or marriage. Griffin's sister Mrs Anne MYNDE (nee KIRTON, chr 23/4/1581 Burghfield) made a Will dated 20/5/1640, when she was a widow of St. Botolph without Aldersgate, London, proved 2/12/1646 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. As well as many members of her KIRTON family, which prove her link with my KIRTONs of Burghfield, Anne's Will also mentions: 1) Her son Roger MYNDE and his unnamed children. The IGI has a Roger MINDE chr 25/11/1604 St. Gregory by St. Paul, London, father Roger; could they have been Anne's son and husband? Interestingly, several KIRTON events were also recorded at St. Gregory's, but I have not been able to link them with my Berks. KIRTONs. 2) Her deceased brother-in-law Peter BRIGHTWELL (d 1633/4 Burghfield). She does not, however, say which of her sisters he had married, but it may have been Mary b abt 1588 Berks. He may have had a son, also Peter, who on 20/10/1628 in Bughfield m his cousin Elnour KIRTON, chr 25/9/1608 Burghfield, daughter of my Griffin, est b abt 1570. 3) Her sister (Mrs) Katherine CHILD (nee KIRTON, chr 8/6/1575 Burghfield) of Bassingdon, Oxon., and Katherine's daughter Anne CHILD. Could Mr CHILD have been Walter, m 3/3/1605 Burghfield? 4) Her "cousin" Henry CARTER is a beneficiary, and William CARTER Esq. of the Middle Temple, London, is an executor and residual beneficiary. 5) To her "loving freind Captaine ffrancis CONNINGSBIE" (sic) Anne leaves her husband's seal and wedding rings, and to his unnamed wife, her own wedding ring "as a remembrance". These are quite personal bequests, indicating a close friendship, especially considering Anne only left her son 40/- for a cloak! 6) The other executor and residual beneficiary is William ALEXANDER of Casham, Oxon. "whome I call father". Does this indicate a rift with her own father? Mrs Anne MYNDE also left small charitable bequests to Christ's Hospital and the poor of St. Botolph without Aldersgate. I would be interested to know if anyone is researching the folk mentioned in this very informative Will, and if they might be able to shed any light on their relationships with Anne MYNDE nee KIRTON, or the origins of her father John KYRTEN, est b before 1550. Griffin KIRTON snr. sold "Kirton's Farm" (a substantial property and land in Pingewood, near Reading, Berks., which still bears that name) in 1620 to Edward HAMLIN. 2 of John KYRTEN's descendants in the 1600s became rich sugar plantation owners in Barbados, which still has an area called Kirtons. My line, however, moved to nearby Tilehurst in the 1600s, where they remained into the 20th century, a poor family. Stephen KIRTON bur 1553 was an Alderman of London, but his family has been well researched, and I can find no link with my elusive John. There were also KIRTONs in Devon around this time. Any info gratefully received! Many thanks. Jay Notify Administrator about this message?
