The main reason genealogical records were kept on serfs were for taxation purposes. It would be limited to the one who took over a particular plot of land. Records would not be kept on younger male or femaile siblings of a family. Then it would start again with the children of the serf assigned to the land.

That was a time of upheaval in England. The enclosures were starting. So some serfs were being forced off the land by the landed nobility, which left them without any means of feeding a family. Sometimes families were split up, some staying & others forced to leave. The taxes on the serfs always had been ruinous and whenever there was a chance to destroy the records, they used the opportunity to their advantage.

While a belated answer, I hope it helps a little. You've already recieved so exellent advice before my two cents worth.
