I guess your answer depends on how you define "king" and how you define 'Merovingian'? Pharmamond is the first Chief of the Franks and was succeeded by his son Chodion the Hairy (aka Clodio). Merovech married the daughter of Clodion and became Chief of the Franks. (aka Merovechus, Meroveg, Merovius) I don't believe the Franks were literate at the time so all records were in Latin & historians Latinized all names. Merovech, allied with the Romans, commanded the Franks in the battle against Atilla the Hun. His descendants continued to be Chief of the Franks. Etiquette did not allow one to elevate oneself to a royal status. Clovis married Clotilda, a Princess of Burgundy, converted to Christianity and was crowned King of the Franks by the Pope. Since the Franks did not have a system of writing, all records were kept by the Greeks or Romans when the 'barbarian' peoples came into contact with them. Sometimes oral tribal histories were written down when they became literate. Then the problem became: Did the written records survive? I hope this helps. Notify Administrator about this message?
