I first came across the idea in Holy Blood, Holy Grail by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh, and Henry Lincoln. (Leigh is the one who sued Brown recently.) As I recall, that book traces the supposed blood line, but sorry I don't have the book anymore.

I would be curious, too, whether the legend predates Holy Blood, Holy Grail (well, yes, there was a book in French not long before HBHG came out); or whether it has surfaced anywhere where a major source was not Pierre Plantard.
