Merovingian Magdalene Legends (Da Vinci Code...)

Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code cleverly picks up on legends that the royal Merovingian dynesty was descended from Jesus and Mary Magdalene, but he didn't invent the legends, which have been around from quite some time. I've now seen all kinds of websites that mention the legends, but none that actually list the supposed line of descent from Merovingian kings back to Mary Magdalene.

The legendary material that I HAVE found jumps from European kings to a family in Troy and then the grandchildren of Biblical Abraham.

The actual line of descent is of course fiction, but the legend seems historically intrigueing in its own right -- who wrote it, when was it written, for what purpose, and how has it survivied and changed over time?

Has anyone come across the actual supposed line of descent, as well as solid historical writing about the life of the legend?
