David,
His father, Sigurd Ring, is as far as Saxo Grammaticus went with this line. Ragnar 'Lodbrok' (hairy breaches) appears in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as well. Sir Frank Stenton, "Anglo-Saxon England" [Oxford, 1971] cites several pre-conquest chronicles which mention Ragnar (who he called the most famous Viking of the ninth century) and his sons Ivar and Halfdan, but no mention of Ragnar Lodbrock's father. He did feel there was sufficient evidence to indicate they came from a dynastic family of Danish kings.
