Fitz means "son of" and it was generally used to create surnames for illegitimate sons form noble or royal families, specially those of norman origin.
For example, FitzAlan means "son of Alan".
Some kings granted to their illegitimate childs the surname FitzRoy ( "son of the king", from the french word "roi"=king ).
James II of England granted to his illegitimate childs the surname FitzJames.
Greetings,
Enrique.
