What does FITZ mean???

I just found this forum and I read the messages regarding de and von before a name. What does the word "FITZ" mean before a name, as in FitzAlan? In some cases, I've noticed that if a child had a name of FitzRobert, that their father was named Robert? Is this what it means? Thanks. clarksha@swbell.net
