Medici in the Movies
Hello to all:
Does anyone have information on movies featuring the Medici
family?
I am familiar with the "Godfathers of the Rennaisance" that
PBS/Lion Television produced a few years ago, as well as
the "Tombs of the Medici" broadcast on the History Channel.
In an ironic twist of history, some of the historical
details of Cosimo de Medici, Pater Patriae of Florence,
closely parallels one of my Mexican ancestors, Don Jose
Maria Almada.
Like Cosimo, Don Jose Maria accumilated a vast sum of
wealth in his day (Sonora, Mexico, 19th century) but
his differences with the Pesqueira Government, as with
Cosmio and the Albizzi family, landed him in jail.
History records that Cosimo de Medici, although found
guilty by his detractors, used money as the means of his
escape, and Don Jose Maria Almada, by paying a "donation"
of $10,000 pesos to the Pesqueira government, likewise
avoided his cruel sentence.
While the head of the Almada family was no great patron of
art, nor did he command profound influence with the papacy,
the mining elite of Sonora recognized Don Jose Maria as
"the" mining lord of Alamos, a colonial silver mining town
founded in 1685.
Alamos, while no where near as vast as Florence, nor as old,
was at one time the seat of many wealthy and influential
families, just as Florence was.
Thanks for reading this!
Best Regards,
Peter Almada
