Hi Eric,
Not sure if this is the same twig of the branch, but I believe….
Henry Medcalf was one of 3 children of Samuel and Martha née Simkin. The 1841 census for Steeple Bumpstead parish in Essex reads Martha Metcalf (sic) -30-Clockmaker, George-5, Henry-3, Sarah-1. No sign of Samuel, but fear not at this stage.
To digress a little, my wife`s family are descended from `George`, and one of George`s daughters was given a rather unusual name, `Annie Hazelwood Medcalf`. I didn`t know what to make of this until I looked for your Henry, and on the 1871 census found the following entry : High Street Balsham, Cambridgeshire - (for info 8 miles from Steeple Bumpstead, 2 from Linton, 2 from Horseheath) – “Henry Medcalf – Head -33 – Watchmaker – b Steeple Bumpstead Essex, Elizabeth – wife – 31 – b Ridgewell Essex, Henry S.G. – son – 5 – b Balsham,William D – son – 3, Florance – daughter – 1 – b Balsham, (Un-named) – daughter – 1 day old – b Balsham , Martha Haselwood – Mother – 62 – visitor – b Esssex Horseheath”. Question – how did Henry`s mother have the surname Haselwood (sic) in 1871. Answer - She`d obviously remarried.
I think there was no sign of Samuel on the 1841 census because he`d already died. There is a record in the GRO, Deaths1840 Sept ¼ Sam Medcalf, Risbridge District Vol 12 p 253. I think she remarried in 1842, GRO Dec ¼, Risbridge District Vol 12 page 753, Martha Medcalf to Giles Hazelwood. She was a widow again in 1871 - Risbridge Vol 4a page 316 records the death of Giles Hazelwood. (This is a little peripheral to my research, so regret I haven`t coughed up to actually look at the certificates.)
On the LDS site, Martha Hazelwood is still going strong on the 1881 census, living apparently on her own at No 8 High Street Linton, but if you press the `next household` button, it`s the same address, No 8, and the family living there are named…Simkin!
Henry is on the `81` as a watchmaker and furniture dealer in High Street Balsham. That little girl, un-named in 1871, was named Kate.
When George Medcalf married in 1859 in his bride Sarah Swan`s home parish of Saffron Walden, Essex, the two witnesses were Henry Medcalf and Sarah Medcalf.
Hope this helps you, Regards, Denys
