Ruth- Check out the Place names of Surrey- Mitcham is just south of London near Croydon and has had the name since early AD. Not always the same spelling but Old English and Middle English pronunciation of vowels and such make the spelling. -ham on the end is a hill, the rest makes it mean Big- hill or Great- hill - It is different from the ones with N on the end such as Mechen.
Mitcham, Meecham, Micham, Mecham with um am etc same name and my Somerset Meechams have had every variation in the same family in the parish records. Did you know the different dialects could have a lot to do with the way it was spelled- in Somerset they pronounce it Zummerzet?
Pam- If you want the book full title and such
let me know
