Mr. Sisler's posting adds support to my conclusion that the following NC-born MEBANEs who appeared in Carroll Co. TN Censuses were children of William Brown MEBANE of Orange Co. NC: 1 William MEBANE (c1794NC-1883TN) m.1823NC Elizabeth L SHEPPARD 2 John MEBANE (1797NC-aft.1860TN) m.1831NC Julia PICKETT 3 Margaret MEBANE (c1803NC-1886+TN) m.abt1828TN James JOHNSON (1806NC-1876TN) 4 Morgan MEBANE (c1816NC-aft.1860TN) m.1843NC Mary Jane MORROW. Morgan also had a sister Dicey MEBANE (b.c1816 and perhaps a twin), who m.1842NC Josiah MORROW, who was the brother of Morgan's wife. Josiah and Dicey didn't go to Carroll Co., but rather were listed in the 1850 Census of Ray Co. MO. Mary Jane and Josiah were children of Robert MORROW, and grandchildren of the Ann MORROW mentioned as daughter in the April 1789 will of Alexander MEBANE Sr. (proved Feb 1793, Orange Co. WB 2-216). William Brown's father wasn't Alexander MEBANE Sr, but rather Alexander's oldest son, William MEBANE (c1741PA-1803NC). This is proved by William's will: William MEBANE will Orange WB D-101 proved Aug 1803: "To my Supposed son William Brown Mebane," one negro and plantation "containing 200 acres of land with the Dwelling house." Other heirs: "wife" [Rebecca], bros. James & David & [neph] Robert Murdock (got Manor Plantation, about 560 ac.). William Brown's wife, Frances WOODS, is buried at Hawfields Church in Alamance Co. but there are problems with her dates as recorded in the Cemetery Listing. She was listed as age 74 in the 1850 Census, in the household of son-in-law James WOODS and wife Polly MEBANE, born about 1810, married 1829 in Orange Co. She was William Brown MEBANE's 2nd wife, with marriage bond dated 16 Jan 1797; Saml. BRADFORD bm. William Brown's first wife and mother of son William is unknown. Censuses indicate that William Brown MEBANE had 5 sons and 5 daughters, not all of whom have been identified.
